Many museums showcase a dizzying array of artifacts plundered and looted during various phases of occupation, war, and colonization. Many of these stolen sacred and preci\ous objects have stories that they wish to tell. Stories about their original use, the land that they came from, the spirits that inhabit them, and the lost stories of their makers.
A lot of contemporary art is inspirited and contains vast cosmologies, teaching tales and helping spirits that can assist us in evolving as a species.
The buildings that house art are also sentient and have messages about the future of the museum that can help us navigate the way that we experience art.
During this tour of the Brooklyn Museum, we will learn to communicate with objects. We will learn various techniques for “remote psychometry” that help us to open our empathic centers and listen with our full selves. We will take turns sharing our psychic impressions of three different art objects, and compare notes.
The exercises that we will explore are designed to nurture space for creativity, imagination, and critical consciousness. It is my hope that in learning these deep listening practices, we can learn to better stand in solidarity with struggles against exploitation, appropriation, and colonization. Let us re-sensitize ourselves to the “culture” that we consume.
