There are few exercises that can get us into the oracular state as deeply as scrying. Scrying comes from the Old English word descry meaning “to make out dimly” or “to reveal.” Scrying is an auto-deepening trance practice, traditionally achieved by staring into a smooth surface. Ancient Egyptians used bowls filled with ink and blood, Aztecs used slabs of obsidian, Ancient Persians used a chalice filled with water, the Celts used darkened brass plates, and many contemporary diviners simply paint a mirror black. My favorite technique for scrying is to fill a bowl or vessel with water and sumi ink so that you have a deep black abyss to stare into – you can use the ink from your divining session to paint or write with afterward.
During this ninety minute workshop we will learn some of the history of scrying and practice mirror scrying and water scrying. I will also read some ancient myths and poems to you that pertain to the art of divination. Please have a hand mirror (any will do) and a bowl full of water handy – if its available to you, I recommend putting a drop of black drawing ink in the water. Please also have a notebook handy. This class is designed to foster the creative imagination, enhance divinatory connections, and create a sense of inner spaciousness.

Eliza Swann is an interdisciplinary artist, intuitive, writer, educator, and community organizer based in Los Angeles and New York.
Eliza received a BA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, and received a Master’s degree in Fine Art from Central St. Martins in London. She has trained in hypnotherapy at the Isis Centre in England, Vedic cosmology and yoga with Dr. Vagish Shastri in Benares, India, and Tarot and Western Magical Practice with the Builders of the Adytum Western Mystery School.
Eliza has exhibited her artwork internationally, most recently at the University of California Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz, CA), and the Women’s Center for Creative Work (Los Angeles, CA).
She has guest lectured at UCLA, the Hammer Museum, the San Francisco Art Institute, Central St Martins, Cal Arts, the Dia Museum, and is currently a Visiting Professor at Pratt Institute. Her book “The Anatomy of the Aura” will be released by St. Martin’s Press in April 2020.
Eliza is the founder of The Golden Dome School, a curatorial and educational platform that studies intersections of art, metaphysics and ecology.
