Plants are our ancestors too. Yet, the spell of colonialism has us feeling disconnected to the rivers of memory that flow through our very being. With plant spirit medicine, magic, and land stewardship we can design our very own powerful rituals to create relationships with the deep wells of memory available to us. Topics covered in this workshop will be the nature of memory through a lens of decoloniality, highlighted plantcestors and their spiritual-medicinal personalities, and practical magical rituals to try with your plantcestors. You will feel empowered to get playful and build a deeper connection to the sea of magic that’s surrounding you! No materials or prior experience is needed for this workshop. I use the definition of Plantcestor created by Layla Kristy Feghali, founder of River Rose Re-membrance, who coined and popularized the term.

Catherine Feliz (they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist, medicine person, writer, organizer, and full spectrum doula born and raised in NYC (occupied Lenape territory). Their medicine path is indebted to their mother, grandmother, and ancestral spirits who have shared their wisdom intimately tied with the sacred landscape and histories of the Bahoruco mountains of Kiskeya Ayiti (Dominican Republic). Catherine’s identities as a queer, first-generation, bi-lingual, intuitive, Afro-Latinx inform their everyday magical practice of bridging different worlds together with the support of plant allies. In their art practice they work to reclaim ancestral technologies that have been systematically erased by drawing from multiple disciplines to unearth histories and make space for decolonial futures. Visit Botánica Cimarrón to find their plant medicines, ritual tools, classes and more. Catherine is also a founding member of Abuela Taught Me, an Afro-Taino 2spirit educational space, and  Homecoming, a QTBIPOC radical care collective. They are currently an MFA candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles department of Interdisciplinary Studio.
